La <em>BC-1217<\/em> est parmi les plus anciennes, produite\u00a0d\u00e8s 1974.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Ce n&rsquo;est pas une machine de poche, ses dimensions (1300 g) et fonctions de calcul la destinent \u00e0 un usage de bureau.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">La manipulation de cette machine ancienne n&rsquo;est pas \u00e9vidente. Les multiplications et divisions demandent une logique classique, avec usage de la touche <em>\u00c9GAL<\/em>, tandis qu&rsquo;additions et soustractions se font \u00e0 la mode postfixe, la touche d&rsquo;op\u00e9rateur achevant le calcul. Et le commutateur <em>K<\/em> produit l&rsquo;accumulation automatique en m\u00e9moire.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">La caract\u00e9ristique la plus remarquable est le grand \u00e9cran \u00e0 12 chiffres. Cet afficheur contient la preuve de son anciennet\u00e9 : la graphie du chiffre <strong><em>4<\/em><\/strong>, \u00ab\u00a0crois\u00e9e\u00a0\u00bb, sp\u00e9cifique de cette p\u00e9riode transitoire o\u00f9 l&rsquo;on passait de la repr\u00e9sentation courbe des chiffres \u00e0 une repr\u00e9sentation rectangulaire et sch\u00e9matique \u00e0 sept segments, exig\u00e9e par les afficheurs \u00e9lectroniques modernes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Les tout premiers afficheurs \u00e9lectroniques (<em>Nixie-tubes<\/em>, <em>Itron-tubes<\/em>) s&rsquo;effor\u00e7aient de restituer la forme courbe des chiffres. Par ailleurs les dispositifs d&rsquo;impression ont toujours reproduit les galbes le plus fid\u00e8lement possible. Ce n&rsquo;est plus le cas avec les afficheurs \u00e0 segments, ceux-l\u00e0 m\u00eames qui \u00e9quipent 99 % des calculatrices non graphiques pr\u00e9sent\u00e9es dans ce site. L&rsquo;afficheur \u00e0 sept segments nous est devenu si familier qu&rsquo;il est difficile de concevoir qu&rsquo;il ait pu heurter les yeux des utilisateurs de 1974.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">En particulier, c&rsquo;est la transcription du <strong><em>4<\/em><\/strong> qui semble avoir pos\u00e9 le plus de probl\u00e8mes de lisibilit\u00e9. Comment expliquer, sinon, qu&rsquo;on ait balafr\u00e9 chaque digit de cette <em>TOSHIBA<\/em> en son segment du milieu, coup\u00e9 en deux, juste pour permettre l&rsquo;apparition d&rsquo;une ligne verticale suppl\u00e9mentaire, impos\u00e9e\u00a0par le seul chiffre <strong><em>4<\/em><\/strong> ? (illustration 1 ci-dessous)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Une autre tentative contemporaine, non plus \u00e0 10 segments mais \u00e0 8, consistera \u00e0 cr\u00e9er un micro segment pour prolonger la barre horizontale du <strong><em>4<\/em><\/strong>, lui restituant son aspect \u00ab\u00a0crois\u00e9\u00a0\u00bb (illustration 2).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Puis la graphie moderne du <strong><em>4<\/em><\/strong> \u00e0 4 segments s&rsquo;imposera d\u00e9finitivement, et plus jamais par la suite on ne rencontrera de <strong><em>4<\/em><\/strong> \u00ab\u00a0crois\u00e9\u00a0\u00bb sur un afficheur \u00e0 segments (illustration 3).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Plus tard encore apparurent les afficheurs \u00e0 matrices de points (illustration 4) et les courbes firent leur retour. A noter qu&rsquo;il n&rsquo;y eut pas de probl\u00e9matique du <strong><em>7<\/em><\/strong>. Ce chiffre, crois\u00e9 lui aussi (en France du moins) n&rsquo;eut jamais de scrupule \u00e0 abandonner sa barre interm\u00e9diaire (inusit\u00e9e chez les anglo-saxons).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A noter aussi que l&rsquo;afficheur \u00e0 10 segments de la <em>TOSHIBA BC-1217<\/em> profite plus discr\u00e8tement \u00e0 un autre chiffre : le <strong><em>1<\/em><\/strong>, qui emprunte du coup la longue barre verticale du milieu, le positionnant ainsi \u00e0 mi-chemin des digits adjacents, ce qui n&rsquo;est jamais le cas avec les afficheurs \u00e0 7 ou 8 segments.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Pour aller plus loin dans cette r\u00e9flexion sur le\u00a0<strong><em>4<\/em><\/strong>, il est utile de prendre en compte la composante g\u00e9ographique. En effet les premiers afficheurs \u00e0 segments \u00e9taient construits sur des <em>LED<\/em> rouges. Et jamais on n&rsquo;a vu de <strong><em>4<\/em><\/strong> rouge \u00ab\u00a0crois\u00e9\u00a0\u00bb. Or les <em>LED<\/em> rouges \u00e9taient abondamment utilis\u00e9es par les am\u00e9ricains. Ainsi on a vu les calculatrices <em>Hewlett-Packard<\/em> dot\u00e9es d&rsquo;afficheurs rouges jusqu&rsquo;au d\u00e9but des ann\u00e9es 80. Et jamais aucune <em>HP<\/em> \u00e0 chiffres verts ne fut commercialis\u00e9e.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Texas-instruments<\/em> fit de son c\u00f4t\u00e9 un usage tr\u00e8s mesur\u00e9 du digit vert pour ses machines de poche. Comportement contraire chez les japonais <em>Sharp<\/em>, <em>Casio<\/em> et d&rsquo;autres qui introduisirent tr\u00e8s t\u00f4t l&rsquo;afficheur fluorescent vert <em>(VFD)<\/em>, et tr\u00e8s peu de machines en diodes rouges chez ces constructeurs. Les am\u00e9ricains se pass\u00e8rent donc facilement du <strong><em>4<\/em><\/strong> au graphisme crois\u00e9. Ce fut plus long pour les japonais. Pour quelles raisons ? Parions que la repr\u00e9sentation aurait laiss\u00e9 maints esprits perplexes car l\u2019\u0153il y est frustr\u00e9, il manque de toute \u00e9vidence quelque chose (chiffre rouge ci-dessous).
